Playful Pedagogy Online: Peter’s Snowy Day Adventures in Elemental Music and Movement

PD In Pajamas, Anyone? Have a winter workshop but don’t want to have to worry about inclement weather causing a cancelation? Here’s the solution!

A highly engaging exploration of music and movement activities based around Ezra Jack Keats’ iconic “Snowy Day” book bring possibilities to life through pathways in the snow, vocal explorations, elemental building blocks, phrase forms, movement improvisations, and instrumental extensions to unpitched percussion, barred instruments, soprano recorders, and ukuleles. A quick visit with the Fleet Foxes and some good times with gifs for movement round out this workshop.

Connecting the Lights Beyond our Screens

We will explore using art by Kandinsky, a song in Finnish, poetry created by participants, and mindful moments to bring happiness and light to ourselves and our students. A mixed meter exploration from Orff Schulwerk MFC Vol. IV will bring a bit of musical challenge to the experience, and offer a path for mixed meter improvisation and composition. Though we are not able to be together in person, we can make music across the spaces together.

If you have a ukulele, have it nearby!

Challenging Times? Play Anyway!

Whether online or in-person, an engaging and playful learning experience through music and movement is an essential outlet for ourselves and our students during these challenging times.

Are you curious about designing more innovative and creative lessons with the Schulwerk as our guide? Do you find yourself wanting to take your own lesson-building capabilities further? Then join us for a journey through the foundations of Orff Schulwerk, model lessons that elevate the human and artistic aspects of music making for young learners, and opportunities to create in small groups and as a community. We’ll discover multiple pathways for playful and process-based lessons!

Experiences and activities may include hand drumming based on phases of the moon, mixed meter improvisation and composition, an adaptation of the folk dance, Gustav’s Skol, and an experience with the artwork of Keith Haring’s “Pop Shop” that takes us to incorporate Hip Hop music and even a ukulele!

Keep Creating and Carry On

Mindful moments to begin, a mixed meter exploration from OS MFC Vol. IV will bring a bit of musical challenge to the experience, and offer a path for mixed meter improvisation and composition. We’ll bring in personal experience with the night sky, and edge into moon phase hand drumming and building blocks, a beautiful Emily Dickinson poem will inspire us, and we’ll end our time together with a musical look at the artwork of Kandinsky.
